MEN'S HOCKEY:MONKSTOWN BEAT Clontarf 4-1 yesterday to hold on to their place at the top of the Leinster Senior League. The club's principal goal scorer, Gareth Watkins, hit two goals, with Lee Cole and Gavin Halloran grabbing one each at Rathdown.
UCD also went down in their second match of the weekend. The students beat Pembroke on Saturday but could not repeat the performance and fell against Fingal 2-1 in Sunday’s meeting.
On Saturday there were hat-tricks all around Dublin and nowhere less than at Belfield, where Shane O’Donoghue hit three for the home side and Alan Sothern three for Pembroke.
The sides were 1-1 at half time before the second-period goal fest. In an unusual scoreline for league contenders Pembroke, conceded five goals in the second half as the students romped home 6-4 winners at the National Hockey Stadium.
Corinthians had a one-sided win against Clontarf at Whitechurch, where Lucas Piccoli hit three for the winners in their 6-2 victory. Not to be outdone at goal-grabbing, Gareth Watkins ensured Monkstown’s positive outcome against Fingal on Saturday as his three scores helped the ’Town to a 6-1 win. Watkins’ tally for the two matches was a very healthy five. Not a bad weekend’s work.
