LEE JANZEN and Paul Stankowski shared the first-round lead at the Honda Classic in Coral Springs, Florida, yesterday alter shooting five-under-par 67 on the brand new course at Heron Bay. Five players were a stroke behind at 68, including Payne Stewart and Britain's Colin Montgomerie.
The wind was a big factor during the first round, and scores were higher than expected on this flat course with no out of bounds and almost no water.
"There's more to this course than we first thought," said Montgomerie. "Suddenly the pins were tucked away and we were playing in tournament conditions. It was tough out there.
"I don't mind it blowing. In fact, what that does is take away the 63s and 62s, but it doesn't stop people from scoring 67s and 68s.
A seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 1993 U.S. Open, Janzen has not won since August of 1995 and last led a tournament in August of 1996.
