Munster, considered by many to be outsiders, yesterday won the GUI Boys Interprovincial Championship at Nenagh for the first time. In the decider, they beat Leinster by six matches to three. Ulster, the holders, took the wooden spoon when they went down by the same margin to Connacht.
The outstanding performance was that of Munster's Mervyn Owens who had failed to be selected for next week's home internationals at Royal North Devon. Playing at number one for the province, he was unbeaten in the singles, beating three members of the new Irish team.
