DUNDALK REPORT:JOHNNY MURTAGH recorded a treble at Dundalk last night to move 88 to 81 ahead of Pat Smullen in the race for the Flat jockeys' title.
Murtagh won the opening maiden on Dynasty, partnered Russian View to victory in the November Handicap and completed his treble with Inch Rebel in the last.
Murtagh sent Dynasty the 1 to 2 favourite to the front at the furlong pole and he wandered slightly under pressure inside the final furlong.
However the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt had too much in the tank for his rivals though and was going away at the finish for a two-and-a-half length win over One Set.
“He did it well and we’re happy enough. Hopefully he’ll go on from this,” said travelling head lad Pat Keating afterwards.
The ‘3 For Free’ Wednesday Night in November Handicap produced a three-way photo with Russian View getting up on the line. Way West had hit the front over a furlong out but was grabbed late home by Senor Tommie and eventual winner Russian View (5-1).
Murtagh finished the night on Inch Rebel who made all in the last race. The Bob Back mare stayed on strongly in the closing stages to score by two-and-a-half lengths from Accompanist.
Well maybe go for an apprentice race with her depending on what she gets from the handicapper for this, said winning trainer Peter Casey.
Smartest received a brilliant front-running ride from Gary Carroll to break her duck in the six-furlong maiden. The Michael Halford-trained filly had a healthy gap on the field from halfway and stuck on gamely in the closing stages as Cheveyo ran on to get within a head at the line.
“It was a great ride, brilliant. No doubt about that,” said Halford. “From a bad draw he got across well. He sent her on and then got a breather. It was top-class and he has made tremendous strides during the year. The 5lb probably made the difference in the end.”
Copper Dock emerged on top from a bunch finish to the six furlong handicap. Ben Curtis produced his mount inside the final furlong and he just held the late charge of Mountain Coral by the narrowest of margins.
“He was due it this year. He got 10lb early in the year and struggled a bit after but he loves it here,” said trainer Tom McCourt.
“He needs thing to go his way. I thought he was running too free and was worried as it’s as keen as I’ve seen him for a long time, but he stuck it out well.
The www.louthholidays.com Handicap produced a thrilling finish with Maybe Grace getting the better of a final furlong duel with Spirit Of Xaar. Fran Berry produced the daughter of Hawk Wing to challenge a furlong out and she soon edged ahead.
