Naas breeze to title win

Naas enjoyed a comfortable win over holders Coill Dubh to capture the county hurling championship at Newbridge yesterday

Naas enjoyed a comfortable win over holders Coill Dubh to capture the county hurling championship at Newbridge yesterday. Assisted by a stiff breeze in the opening half, they dominated proceedings and restricted Coill Dubh to a single point.

Full forward John Ryan opened the Naas account with a point which preceded a fracas involving several players and which resulted in a player from either side - Martin Boran of Naas and Chris Byrne of Coill Dubh - being sent to the line.

Naas continued to pile on the pressure and were leading by seven points when Adrian McAndrew got Coill Dubh's first score three minutes before half time.

Naas led 0-10 to 0-1 at the break and added three more points after the restart. Coill Dubh improved with the aid of the breeze in the second half and, with John Byrne playing well at midfield, they managed three points without reply before a goal by substitute Geoffrey Hayden brought them within reach. But they ran out of steam and while Naas failed to add to their score, their lead was never seriously threatened.
