Eamonn Curran, the former President of the Golfing Union of Ireland and a former Irish team Captain has been elected Executive Chairman of the Council of Nations Golf Unions (CONGU). The organisation, founded in 1924, and set up on the recommendation of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club for the purpose of administering the Handicap Scheme for the Four Home Unions. CONGU are also responsible for organising the Home Internationals.
Curran is a member of Woodbrook Golf Club where he was Captain in 1969. He was elected to the Leinster Branch GUI in 1977 and was Honorary Treasurer for a period before being elected Chairman in 1990.
A former inter-county GAA player with Roscommon, he also represented Connacht in the Interprovincial Championships from 1968 to 1971. In 1985 he was elected Captain of the Irish International team and two years later led Ireland to victory in the Triple Crown, European Team Championship and Quadrangular Championship.
