No Slouch day's best

THIS afternoon's meeting at Leopardstown carries the added bonus of four races being televised by RTE 1. The Foxrock track announced only last week that they have entered into an agreement with Bord Gais to sponsor today's Bank Holiday meeting for the next three years and the semi-state body is pleased to be able to invite all their customers to a day's racing at half price (if you bring along the gas bill).

The feature event on the card, the Bord Gais Killavullan Stakes, has attracted eight runners, with Jim Bolger and Aidan O'Brien providing four of the entries. The constant calls for overnight declaration of jockeys is given further fuel in this Group Three race as Bolger's pair, Mosconi and Lil's Boy, have no riders in the morning papers, leaving betting shop punters in the dark.

Christy Roche has elected to ride O'Brien's Royal Academy colt No Slouch in preference to Gowran Park scorer Shell Ginger and the tip should be taken.

The 190,000 guineas purchase was a very impressive winner of a Naas maiden over a fortnight ago, cruising to the front at the furlong pole and sprinting clear to beat Kharshani by four lengths.

O'Brien thinks very highly of No Slouch and believes the colt to be the ideal type for next year's Guineas. He is preferred to Bolger's Mosconi, who supplied the Co Carlow trainer with his fifth success in the Derrinstown Birdcatcher Nursery on the same day as No Slouch's eye-catching debut.

The Ballydoyle trainer should also land the opener, the European Breeders Fund Maiden, with Plaza De Toros, who was slowly away when beaten three-quarters of a length by Mubadara at the Curragh last week.
