Nugent eases up

Top seed Stephen Nugent remains a strong favourite in the ITF K-Swiss junior tennis world ranking event at Riverview

Top seed Stephen Nugent remains a strong favourite in the ITF K-Swiss junior tennis world ranking event at Riverview. However, the Malahide youth would have been more satisfied with his 6-4 7-5 dismissal of James Colhoun had he shown greater mental strength towards the end of each set.

The door was carelessly left open for Colhoun to get back into the match with a realistic chance of winning a set despite the fact that Nugent led 5-2 in both sets. Only moments of naivety on Colhoun's part when trying to get to the net precluded his chances of turning the match on its head.

Unseeded Ciaran Foley had perhaps the most notable win of the round when he sent the talented Warwickshire player Anthony Perkins packing 6-1 6-3. Another Briton, Robert Shulver, stands in Foley's way in the quarter-finals. Mark Finnegan's bid weakened after a first set tie break with Denmark's Andreas Lauland, and he lost 6-7 2-6.

Britain's Julia Smith, the top seed, has lost only one game en route to the girls' quarter-finals, but Irish interest is very much alive with Emma Murphy, Dearbhla Kelly and seventh seeded Elsa O'Riain making it to the last eight.
