Kevin O'Brien and Keith Byrne combined to gain Wicklow to their second league win at Aughrim yesterday. Their teamwork opened up huge gaps in the Waterford defence and between them they accounted for 2-9 of Wicklow's total. Byrne scored two goals at crucial stages of the first half, just as Waterford were trying to gain a foothold with the assistance of the wind. His first came on 17 minutes at the end of a 60-yard solo run, and his second ended a fine team move. Byrne's scores ensured that Wicklow led 2-7 to 2-3 at half-time. Waterford had twice forged ahead when presented with two goals by the Wicklow defence - Kevin Walsh saw his free from 60 yards out sail all the way to the Wicklow net and an Oliver Costello goal also came courtesy of mistakes in the Wicklow defence. Inspired by the brilliant O'Brien, who scored seven points in all, Wicklow increased their lead to 2-12 to 2-3 in the third quarter and there was no way back for Waterford.
