CHAMPION TRAINER Aidan O’Brien will face a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) disciplinary panel hearing on Tuesday on the back of his controversial decision to refuse the York racecourse vet permission to examine Cape Blanco after his Dante Stakes success in May.
O’Brien’s employee Pat Keating will also face the panel on charges that the two men broke a number of rules in refusing to allow Cape Blanco be trotted for the vet when appearing to be lame after the race, and also for refusing to attend a subsequent inquiry into the matter.
O’Brien has also been charged with breaching the rule which states: “A person must not act in any manner which the authority considers to be prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of horse racing in Great Britain.”
In the Dante aftermath, O’Brien said Cape Blanco was sore due to banging a heel in the race and that no purpose would have been served by trotting the horse again for the racecourse vet.
O’Brien wasn’t present at York, but instructed Keating not to trot Cape Blanco and to continue preparations for flying home to Ireland.
It is almost two years since O’Brien was fined £5,000 (€6,000) by the BHA after he was judged to have breached the “team tactics” rules when Duke Of Marmalade won the Juddmonte Stakes run at Newmarket.
O’Brien supplies what could be a short-priced favourite at Galway this afternoon when Enchanted Forest lines up for the juvenile maiden.
However, the very brave might do well to remember how the colt was beaten at 1 to 4 in Naas last time.
Tuesday’s Topaz Mile winner Ask Jack tries to double up in the €80,000 premier handicap, a race he was just beaten in last year by Fit The Cove.
The latter could manage only fifth to Miss Eze here earlier in the week, but the veteran is a course specialist and is 5lb lower in the ratings than in this same race last year.
On his best form that gives him the clear beating of Ask Jack and Maundy Money, so Fit The Cove could be the value option.
Mr Bones has been in splendid form over hurdles and has taken a drop in the ratings for his first flat start of the year in the two-mile handicap.
