Belvedere ... 19 St Mary's College ... 16 An injury-time try from Belvedere captain Eoin O'Carroll decided this entertaining Leinster Schools' Junior Cup quarter-final at Donnybrook yesterday.
St Mary's, who twice held the lead, may feel aggrieved to have gone out in such circumstances but few will begrudge Belvedere victory.
Possessing a fine set of backs, with Colin Murphy excelling in the number 13 jersey, Belvedere showed character to craft out this victory.
Belvedere went ahead inside three minutes when, from a tackle by full back David Mongan, Belvedere number eight Conor McGinn was quick to capitalise on a St Mary's spill to off-load to outhalf Eoin O'Malley, who crossed the line. O'Malley duly converted. There followed a frustrating period for Belvedere as St Mary's defended resolutely.
St Mary's opened their account on 15 minutes through Neil Cowhey but with Belvedere pressing them unto their own line they needed to have their wits about them to keep in contention.
Having weathered 10 minutes of Belvedere pressure, a relieving kick took St Mary's upfield. From there they posted eight points without reply. A sweet strike from Cowhey on the right side put just a point between the two teams with five minutes left on the clock.
And then on 28 minutes St Mary's went in front for the first time in the game. Having forced a five-metre scrum, a quick heel from number eight Kevin Gallivan saw the St Mary's pack make a collective push for the line. Prop Richie Sweeney eventually gathered to cross the line and that left the score at 11-7 to St Mary's at the break.
Belvedere took a while to get themselves back into the game but made headway through their second row Johnathan Slattery to leave them just 10 metres short of the St Mary's line. And then from second phase, a swerving run from Mongan, off an O'Malley pass, saw the full back touch down under the posts.
There was a lengthy delay in the game following an injury on the half-way line resulting in the retirement of Belvedere hooker Seán Ryan.
When play resumed with three minutes left on the clock St Mary's found themselves on the attack when Cowhey's pass found Nick Cunningham out on the right and he nearly crossed for a try in the corner. After been awarded the scrum St Mary's went ahead on 60 minutes when scrumhalf Matthew Conway found a way over.
Belvedere, however, summoned up one last attack and in the third minute of overtime an overlap out on the left-hand side allowed O'Carroll to go over after O'Malley had again made the telling pass.
