Sonia O'Sullivan will almost certainly have to focus on a single event at next year's World Championships in Seville following the schedule that was announced this week. The 5,000-10,000 metres double that she achieved at the European Championships this summer is unlikely to be repeated as there would be a four-race timetable in the space of five days.

If O'Sullivan were to attempt the double, it would mean a 10,000 metres heat on August 23rd, a 5,000 heat the following day, then a single day's rest before the 10,000 and 5,000 finals the next two days - an exhausting schedule by anyone's standards.

American sprinter Marian Jones, however, is likely to request the IAAF to change times in her chosen events, as the heats of the long jump begin just a half-hour before the 100 metres first round. Jones had intended to include both events in her four gold medal attempt.

Michael Johnson was granted a similar request at the Atlanta Olympics two years ago to allow him gain a 100-200 metres

double. At this stage, however, it is not known whether the IAAF will consider Jones's request or indeed one by O'Sullivan should she decide on the option of running both events.

Meanwhile, the traditional start to the domestic cross-country season takes place tomorrow with the 15th running of the Gerry Farnan Memorial Cross Country races in the Phoenix Park. National champion Peter Matthews of Dundrum-South Dublin is likely favourite in the senior men's race although a Clonliffe team that includes Niall Bruton and Noel Cullen will provide some quality opposition.

The race is a tribute to one of the great coaches of the 1970s and is run over the Magazine Fort area where Farnan trained so many of his charges, including Eamonn Coghlan. Host club Metro-St Brigid's will also be hoping for a strong finish through Shane Healy, Ken Nason and Colm de Burca, all of whom are currently coached by Coghlan.
