Hardly had we regained our composure after Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Czech Republic when the Daily Express ran an 'exclusive' telling us that Joe Kinnear is all set to replace the man who masterminded the victory, young Michael McCarthy. McCarthy, they reckon, is tipped to take over from Danny Wilson as Sheffield Wednesday boss, leaving the Irish post free for Kinnear to fill. Unless, they add, Kinnear takes the Wednesday job, which he is also being linked with, or the Fulham job . . . or the Celtic job . . . or the . . . ah look: we're getting confused now. Let's just wait and see.

The biggest transfer rumour of the week, though, was Newcastle's alleged interest in 22-year-old Spanish defender and household name Unai Vergara, who plays with second division side Merida. Vergara is a central defender, eight of which Bobby Robson already has on the books at St James' Park. But, as our Grannies used always say, "you can never have enough centre-backs".
