The London-born Wright switched allegiance not long after the 2010 Commonwealth Games, having attended Brymore Academy, citing lack of proper race-walking support within UK Athletics. Now, he’s certainly found that here, moving to Cork to be coached by Rob Heffernan, and part of his small but effective training group in Cork. Wright has been steadily improving in the last two seasons, and although still a little better suited to the 20km walk, ultimately his potential lies in the longer distance, where he already has a best of 3:48:31, and which won’t leave him too far off the top places in Rio.
