David Peelo of Sorrento, who was second in the MidEastern Region road race championship at Ballyboughal on Saturday, went one better yesterday when he added the hill climb title to his list of successes at Kilpedder. Peelo was fastest for the time trial test of just over a mile, promoted by Sorrento and sponsored by Generali, in four minutes 11.5 seconds with Paddy Moriarty and Alan Buckley second and third.
A breakaway group of six went clear on the first of seven laps of a circuit of nine miles on Saturday and they had it between them, with Colm Bracken's finishing sprint decisive at the end. Officials had to study a print of a very tight tussle for second place before giving Peelo the verdict over Brian Lennon.
Mark Scanlon, second in the Junior Tour, beat the seniors in the Cycleways Cup race at Navan. At the end of the 60 miles Scanlon led in Shane Baker with Sean Bracken best of the rest over two minutes behind.
