Pembroke face stern test from Harlequins

MEN'S HOCKEY/Irish Senior Cup: Many of the remaining clubs will be content enough that either Lisnagarvey or Instonians will have departed the competition by the time the semi-final draw is made this weekend. That takes place immediately after their match in Blaris.

But in truth all the teams, one expects, bar Three Rock Rovers, remain in the competition. From Dublin, Glenanne, Corinthians and Pembroke hope to advance, with Corinthians and Glenanne coming off reasonable form and Pembroke seeking a lift after their 2-1 mid-week league defeat by Rovers.

But mid-week matches are notoriously bad indicators, and Pembroke, if they can find their form in front of goals and at set pieces, could threaten Cork Harlequins.

However, even allowing for home advantage the Cork side arrive with their own considerable reputation and with quality players. Wesley Bateman, David Eakins and Jason Black are just back from a training week in Barcelona with the Irish team, while Edward and Richard Gash, Mark Lombard and Colm Brady add to a dangerous side.

"I think there is going to be a number of personal battles in the match," said Pembroke coach and former international Simon Filgas. "Gordon Elliott and David Eakins want to prove who is the better forward on the day, while Nigel Henderson and Wesley Bateman are the two Irish goalkeepers and want to be on the winning side."

Glenanne's trip to Garryduff is also fraught with danger. Again Mark Black, Karl Burns, David Hobbs and John Jermyn are coming off the stint at the Real Club de Polo and, with home advantage, Glenanne, despite their ability to snatch late winners, have a tough 70 minutes ahead of them.

Corinthians' joust with Banbridge could be a high-scoring game. Last week the Dublin side hit seven goals against Avoca. There was a lot of good the home side can take out of the game, but coach Jonno Cole might be more interested in the three goals his side conceded in the first 50 minutes.

Once again James Benson showed what shape he can put on a match. His awareness on the ball and all round game is the perfect foil for those around him, notably Colin Stewart, whose sharpness and high tempo throughout a game is often the difference.

Corinthians, even with Charlie Henderson back from international duty, need to harden their defence.
