A big contribution with the bat from Australian Luke Jackson could launch Pembroke on their way to victory over close neighbours Railway Union in an intriguing Conqueror Leinster Senior Cup semi-final at Park Avenue today (11.0).

A Queensland-born 21-year-old, Jackson has indulged in some high-powered batting, compiling two centuries as well as a few 70s since his arrival at Sydney Parade this season so he will be the target for the Railway bowlers who will be eager to secure a psychological advantage by capturing his wicket early on.

With the injection of the Carlisle players, there is a quiet air of optimism around Park Avenue this season and to justify that belief they can point to the annihilation of Merrion in the previous round.

Remarkable campaigner Brendan "Ginger" O'Brien could be a vital cog with the bat for Railway while the Molins family - father Rodney, and sons Jason and Greg - have the ability to play an important part in their drive for victory.

However, Pembroke will be the favourites to advance as they look to have the in-depth strength to survive most situations.

The second semi-final between Clontarf and The Hills has the potential to be a real cracker as both sides are renowned for their combative qualities.

It is a time of plenty at The Hills with three internationals in the side including the indomitable Matt Dwyer and with the scalps of YMCA and Malahide already under their belts, they are formidable foes.

But as keen as The Hills will be to reach the final, Clontarf are also a great side for the pressure game. A sizeable individual contribution could decide what promises to be a high-scoring encounter.

Also on today, the Whitney Moore League begins with Old Belvedere at home to CYM at the Cabra Oval, while at Anglesea Road Merrion entertain Malahide.

Tomorrow, the semi-finals of the Leinster Senior League will be decided with Merrion hosting Leinster at Anglesea Road, and Pembroke confronting Clontarf at Sydney Parade - both start at 1.00 p.m.
