Leinster JC Hurling Championship / Piltown (Kilkenny) 1-15 St Vincent's 1-8 (0-10 to 1-7 after normal time): A fine contest in Marino yesterday saw Piltown capture the Leinster Junior Club hurling title after extra time.

Former Kilkenny minor panellist Andrew McCarthy made a telling contribution for the visitors in the concluding stages with St Vincent's managing just one score over the additional periods.

McCarthy's dead-ball expertise took Piltown into a three-point lead early in the second period before a long ball in from the midfielder saw Shane Kinsella convert from close range.

Piltown had led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the half-time break after Piltown goalkeeper Jim Power had pulled off a fine save to deny Philip Harney. And although Piltown began to pull away in the second half with John Malone landing two scores, a Liam Burns goal brought Vincent's to level terms with three minutes to go.

Two Limerick footballers shipped heavy injuries in a pre-season challenge against Cork ITC at Newcastlewest yesterday. Former hurler Mark Keane, making his debut for the footballers, sustained a broken jaw and was detained overnight at Limerick Regional Hospital and it is understood he is to have an operation this morning.

Keane had fallen out of favour with former hurling manager Dave Keane and decided to play with the footballers for next season.

Meanwhile, in the same game, goalkeeper Séamus O'Donnell suffered a broken nose in an accident and was also removed to hospital. Cork ITC won the match by 2-11 to 2-8.
