MARTIN PIPE'S record breaking attempt at going through Taunton's seven race card yesterday blew out at the first hurdle. But the champion trainer, who sponsored all the events at the meeting, still managed to net a 363 to 1 four timer courtesy of wins for Indian Jockey, D'Naan, Banntown Bill and Maid Equal.
Pipe saddled three candidates for the opening Martin Pipe Winners Galore Novices' Hurdle - the well fancied Melt The Clouds, Doctor Green and Break The Rules. The latter fared best but was forced to play second fiddle behind Easy Listening, going under by two lengths.
However, the trainer took the defeat philosophically saying: "I am not deflated. It's a fun day and that's what it's all about. I have got lots of guests and owners here and they are all having a good time up in the box.
"It was an impossible task to go through the card but it's an ambition of mine to do it one day and we will try again. You could say Pipe's horses are always trying and they will keep on trying," he confided later.
Meanwhile, Tarrs Bridge is the value wager in today's £40,000 added Tote Bookmakers Sandown Handicap Hurdle.
The six year old won at the first time of asking at Stratford before following up in a handicap hurdle bat the same course. After losing his unbeaten record at Cheltenham, Tarrs Bridge returned to the latter course for a Grade Two novices race.
He was fitted with blinkers for, the first time and the aids very much had the desired effect. Always cruising, Tarrs Bridge led on the bit at the last and stormed away to beat Southern Nights.
That represents solid form which stamped Tarrs Bridge as a useful prospect. With the blinds on again, the grey can make the most of receiving weight from all bar one here.
Avro Anson, who made such an eye catching reappearance at Haydock two weeks ago, can gain his reward in the £30,000 added Agfa Diamond Handicap Chase.
