The first national pitch and putt event of the 1999 season, the Skoda National mixed team event, will take place at RGSC pitch and putt club, Kingswood, Co Dublin, on Sunday. The competition is for team of four (two men and two women) and is played over 36 holes mixed foursomes with the players changing partners after the first round.
Forty-one teams have qualified from the regional qualifying rounds to contest the finals at RGSC. Crosshaven, Co Cork, last year's winners with a total of 166 points, will be represented this year by Mick McCarthy, Jim McCarthy, Marie McCarthy and Rita Aherne, while the 1996 winners, Tullamore have two teams in the finals.
However, the largest club qualifiers are the neighbouring Glenville Club in Dublin, with six teams. Glenville have been runners-up and third in this event and will be looking for the ultimate prize this time. Alan Weston and Wendy Leech, the 1996 national mixed winners will lead the Seapoint, Drogheda team while the national ladies juniors champion, Rosaleen Thompson will lead five teams from Lucan. However, the likely favourites are Lakewood, who led the Cork qualifiers and their team includes Pat Conway, recently-crowned Munster Ladies Strokeplay champion, Dan Conway, Chris Casey and Miriam Casey.
