All-Ireland champions Meath are certain of one more honour this season by providing the three shortlisted candidates in the GAA writers' association award for the football Player of the Year.

Trevor Giles, John McDermott and Ollie Murphy all played a key role in Meath's success this summer, while Nigel Crawford will also represent the county for the Young Player of the Year award. Westmeath's Dessie Dolan and Cork's young captain Philip Clifford are also shortlisted in that category.

Three counties have shortlisted candidates for the hurling award, with DJ Carey of Kilkenny, Brian Corcoran of Cork and last year's winner Brian Whelahan of Offaly in contention. The Young Hurler of the Year will be decided between Cork's Wayne Sherlock and Diarmuid O'Sullivan as well as Henry Shefflin of Kilkenny.

The winners will be announced next Monday and the awards presented at the Guinness Reception Centre the following Friday. Last year's football award went to Jarlath Fallon of Galway, with team-mate Michael Donnellan taking the young footballer and Stephen Byrne of Offaly the young hurler award.
