Tottenham could make another attempt to lure David Pleat back to the club, as director of football, after their chairman, Alan Sugar, revealed that new head coach Christian Gross will be given an executive partner to help him revive ailing Spurs.
Former England manager Bobby Robson, who has vowed to one day return to English football from his general manager role at Barcelona, and Lawrie McMenemy, who quit as Southampton's director of football when Graeme Souness resigned as manager in the summer, are other names certain to be linked with the role.
But Pleat, sacked by Sheffield Wednesday 18 days ago, was the man Sugar wanted as senior partner in a two-man management team three years ago before Gerry Francis took over from Ossie Ardiles.
And although Pleat turned down the opportunity then, saying he still wanted day-to-day involvement with players, he may now see things differently and decide it is time to use his vast knowledge on English football in more of a consultancy role.
The job would also be likely to carry a seat on the Spurs board and Pleat still retains great affinity for the club.
Although Gross has a splendid record in Swiss football with Grasshopper and was recommended to Sugar by Ottmat Hitzfeld, his predecessor in Zurich and now boss of European champions Borussia Dortmund, who is believed to have been given first refusal of the job, he clearly lacks experience of Premiership football.
Meanwhile, Everton have made a last-ditch "take it or leave it" bid to land Norwegian goalkeeper Thomas Myrhe. Manager Howard Kendall has confirmed Everton have faxed a new final offer to Myrhe's club Viking Stavanger after talks between the clubs broke down.
Viking want £1 million upfront, while Everton have offered half of that figure as a down payment but with extras that could take the deal to £1.2million. Myrhe is on the brink of being selected for the Norwegian World Cup squad and impressed Kendall in a week-long trial last month.
Aston Villa will attempt to resurrect Savo Milosevic's £4 million transfer to Napoli today when officials from the Italian club visit Birmingham. Napoli's interest in the player went cold on Wednesday when Milosevic spoke out against the deal, saying that he would rather fight for his place at Villa Park than join the struggling Italian side, who are one place off the bottom of Serie A.
But the transfer appears to be back on again after Villa secretary Steve Stride confirmed that the Napoli delegation would fly in today.
Italian goalkeeper Stefano Visi could become Ron Atkinson's first signing for Sheffield Wednesday. The 25-year-old, who is currently with Serie B side Pescara, is on trial at Hillsborough and played for the reserves at Preston this week. Pescara want around £250,000 for Visi.
Plans for a new Scottish Premiership were put on hold yesterday in another twist to an ongoing saga. The 10 premier division clubs have withdrawn their notice to retire for one week following a four-hour meeting of the Scottish League management committee.
The top 10 are still intent on setting up their own breakaway league. But league secretary Peter Donald said: "There is now a possibility that can be achieved in conjunction with the Scottish League and not against it."
Meanwhile, Ian Harte, Leeds' Republic of Ireland international defender, kept a clean sheet when thrust into an emergency goalkeeping role for the second half of Leeds Reserves' 3-1 win at Derby on Wednesday night.
