Rangers comprehensively outplayed one of the worst Motherwell teams to visit Ibrox in years, yet still incurred the wrath of their supporters who welcomed the three points but were a good deal less enthralled by their team's over-elaboration.

Tore-Andre Flo, Ronald de Boer and substitute Claudio Caniggia did find the net in a 3-0 win, but Russell Latapy missed a penalty and countless other opportunities were missed.

In fairness to Rangers they could also have had two further penalties but their apparently legitimate claims were brushed aside by referee Mike McCurry.

"We created enough chances to score more and should have," admitted the Rangers manager Dick Advocaat. "We also had some opportunities for penalties that we didn't get - again - so I was reasonably pleased with the 90 minutes."

Rangers will determine today whether or not they will play their UEFA cup tie against Enzhi Makhachkala on Thursday but captain Barry Ferguson, for one, hopes they will stay at home.

"I'm certainly not going," he said. "I want to see my children grow up. It would seem mad to have to go to Dagestan with all the troubles but it's up to chairman Murray and UEFA."

On Saturday, Celtic prepared for their Champions League debut against Juventus with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Dundee at Dens Park. Henrik Larsson scored twice and Stilian Petrov and Shaun Maloney completed the route to send Martin O'Neill's side to Turin in good heart.
