PortarlingtoN captured an All-Ireland title last week when they won the Toyota-sponsored Golf as Gaeilge for the Holmpatrick Cup. Some 140 clubs throughout the country started out in the event last May, with Portarlington, Woodstock, Forrest Little and Co Longford reaching the final at the splendid Ceann Sibeal links last weekend. The Portarlington pair of 15-handicapper Camillus McGettrick and Brian Whelan (17 handicap) finished seven up to win from Forrest Little.
John O'Connell (10) and Kevin Murray (13) representing the Dublin club shot 6 up with Woodstock's Paul Coote (8) and Declan Coote (13) next on 5 up and Co Longford's Daniel Watts (7) and Eamon Carey (9) fourth on 4 up. The Holmpatrick Cup was first played for in 1932 and this year some 12,000 players took part.
