Proffitt profits from bad weather

The bad weather prevented the final 80-mile stage of the Tour of the North from going ahead at Ballymena yesterday. Heavy snow on the roads forced officials to declare the placings at the end of Monday's fourth stage as final.

This left Englishman Andy Proffitt (25), from Canterbury, the overall winner by 59 seconds from Belfast pair Ian Chivers and Conor Henry. At the finish at Larne on Monday, Henry closed up to be level with Chivers and they were only separated overall by their time trial placings.

Dave McCall, who was in a breakaway group of 14 that went almost six minutes ahead on Monday, putting him leader on the road for a while, finished fourth at 1:18, followed by Tommy Evans.

Final overall: 1, A Proffitt (VC Deal) 6:18:13; 2, I Chivers (Laser) at 59 secs; 3, C Henry (Laser) same time; 4, D McCall (Maryland) 1:18; 5, T Evans (Banbridge) 1:51; 6, J Millar (Paisley) 3:14; 7, D Easton (Maryland) 4:13; 8, P Butler (Laser) 4:32; 9, B Stewart (Phoenix) 4:43; 10, J Grant (UCF) 5:52.
