PSV Eindhoven 1 Olympique Lyon 1 AET/Aggregate 2-2. PSV win 4-2 on pens: PSV Eindhoven sneaked through to the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over French club Olympique Lyon in the Philips Stadium last night.
Robert hit the winning penalty for the 1988 European champions following a 1-1 draw after extra time that had left the aggregate scores level at 2-2. It was the first knockout match in Champions League history, apart from the final, to be decided on a penalty shootout.
An equaliser from PSV's Alex five minutes into the second half cancelled out Sylvain Wiltord's opener to take tie into extra time.
Both sides had their chances in those nail-biting 30 minutes with the French side unlucky not to get a penalty.
Wiltord's opportunist strike had given the French champions an early lead, but Alex produced a composed finish early in the second half to restore parity, and neither team could make the decisive breakthrough in the final 40 minutes.
Hiddink recalled Ji-Sung Park, André Ooijer and Johann Vogel and Lyon did likewise, with six players, omitted for their 2-2 weekend draw, returning.
PSV attacked patiently from the off and almost fashioned a chance for Park inside 90 seconds. Lyon were equally adventurous as they quickly went in search of the requisite away goal, Michael Essien beating Young-Pyo Lee to a bouncing ball and drilling in a centre which Alex picked off the toe of the on-rushing Wiltord.
The France forward was not to be denied in the 10th minute, however, as he cancelled out PSV's advantage with a neat finish from 12 metres. PSV centre-half Wilfred Bouma failed to get the desired length on a headed clearance from Florent Malouda's innocuous cross and Wiltord latched on to it, held off Alex and fired home.
