Three minutes from the end, United were awarded a penalty for a push by Paddy McLoughlin on Dave Mulcahy but goalkeeper Dan Connor's kick was saved by David Forde.
However, a minute into injury time, Alan Carey floated over a cross and Purcell rose above the Derry defence to direct his header into the far corner of the net.
