Men's Hockey: Railway Union emphasised that this year's championship is as open as it has been for some years when they pulled off the unexpected and handed Pembroke Wanderers their first defeat of the season at Park Avenue.

Despite Pembroke having international striker Gordon Elliott back in the attack they fell to two goals from Paul O'Brien at short corners as Railway sped to the 3-1 win and to second place on the table behind the unbeaten Glenanne.

Railway will look to the win as part of their great start to a season in which they have won their first two matches, while Pembroke, with just four points from three games with a win, a draw, and a loss have not yet demonstrated that they are yet a league-winning side.

Of all the teams in the opening weeks, it has been Glenanne who have pulled off the results early season and with three wins from three outings top the table and set the early pace.

Once again it was a Joe Brennan strike that separated Glenanne from Fingal in a tight match.

Elsewhere Peter McConnell's strike for Three Rock Rovers was not enough as Corinthians earned their first win of the season in Rathfarnham, while Michael Fry's strike for YMCA was a goal short in their meeting with Monkstown, who opened their account for the season with a 2-1 win.

At Newpark a goal fest entertained a sparse crowd as Trinity and Avoca drew 4-4, giving the home side their first senior point for two seasons, having been promoted last year.

Trinity walked away from the game the more disappointed side as Avoca's equaliser arrived after the full-time whistle was blown. At that stage Avoca had earned a final short corner and with the set-piece the only move remaining in the game, Dan Carter duly converted for his hat-trick and Avoca's first points of the season.

No doubt though both sides will cause trouble this season, Trinity's Phelie Maguire and Peter Blackeney always at the heart of the attack and Carter proving what a very useful summer recruit he has been for Avoca.
