Cork Report:Noel Meade's golden run of form continued as Mattock Ranger won the Cork Grand National yesterday. Despite not having had a race for 210 days, the seven-year-old appeared to improve greatly for the application of first-time blinkers and the step up to three-and-a-half miles.
Meade also trained the third home, Back To Bid, but stable jockey Paul Carberry picked the right one.
The 6 to 1 shot took up the running inside the final mile and appeared to have all his rivals in trouble before AKA Jake threw down a huge challenge after the last.
The seven-year-old dug deep, though, to land the spoils by a short-head, with a further 23 lengths back to his stablemate in third.
Liskennett landed a sizeable gamble for Charles Byrnes in the EBF Novice Hurdle.
Third behind the smart Rinroe on her hurdles debut only last week, she was ridden with great confidence by Niall Madden to reward some hefty bets.
An opening price of 9 to 1 soon disappeared and the four-year-old returned at 9 to 2, beating 2 to 1 favourite Major Finnegan by three-quarters of a length.
The former John Gosden-trained Signatory travelled well for most of the race but was short of room two out and finished fast to take third for Meade.
The most impressive winner of the day was Edward O'Grady's Sky's The Limit, who provided the trainer and stable jockey Andrew McNamara with a double after the earlier success of Oola Lad in the INH Stallion Owners EBF Fund Maiden Hurdle.
