Rangers' late rally not enough

Rangers' Champions League campaign is over before it has really begun

Rangers' Champions League campaign is over before it has really begun. The Turkish champions survived a late rally by the visitors in Istanbul to take the tie on aggregate and Rangers' future now lies in the UEFA Cup alongside Kilmarnock and Hibernian.

The result could cost Rangers £10 million. This may be classed as glorious failure but it is another major setback for their manager Dick Advocaat.

The night began in the worst manner for Rangers when the Ghanaian Samuel Johnson went down under Scott Wilson's challenge some 25 yards in front of the visitors' goal.

Stefan Klos stayed off his line as he marshalled his defenders and Haim Revivo had no difficulty planting the free-kick past him and the wall to score in the fourth minute.

The German dived despairingly but his outstretched left arm could not reach the ball.

It was a dreadful start for Rangers and the goal also meant the tie would be decided in 90 minutes.

The Australian Tony Vidmar was having a sorry night on the left with nothing going right and Rangers made a tactical change at the break, taking him off and sending Maurice Ross on as a third centre-back as the formation changed from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2.

Ross made an instant impact. His back-post cross was harmless but put out for a corner that found its way to the substitute at the far post and, when he knocked it back, Wilson was denied by a block on the line.

Rangers were applying most of the pressure until Fenerbahce made a 70th-minute substitution, replacing Revivo with Serhat Akin.

Within a minute the substitute had doubled the Turks' lead. Lazetic played him through and with his first touch he blasted the ball past Klos.

Rangers replaced Andrei Kanchelskis with Claudio Caniggia and straight away Fernando Ricksen pulled a goal back courtesy of a hefty deflection off Lazetic. But it was not to be Rangers' night.

Parma's 2-1 aggregate defeat by Lille means that for the first time all three English teams will be seeded for the Champions League first group stage.
