RAPID VIENNA reached the European Cup Winners' Cup final after cruising to a 3-0 victory over Dutch side Feyenoord in Vienna last night to breeze through 4-1 on aggregate.
In the other semi-final, Paris St Germain beat Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 in Paris (2-0 on aggregate), to qualify for their first European final after losing in three consecutive semi-finals. The final takes place in Brussels on May 8th.
For Rapid, former Cologne striker Carsten Jancker, who scored a vital away goal in the first leg in Rotterdam, sent the Austrians on their way, opening the score after just two minutes.
Christian Stumpf added a second on 32 minutes to the delight of the 45 ,000 crowd before Jancker completed the scoring two minutes later.
Jancker had also been the inspiration behind his team's 4-0 demolition of Dynamo Moscow in the previous round.
Feyenoord were a shadow of their usual selves and appeared to accept defeat immediately after they went behind.
Neither finalist has won the trophy, although Rapid did reach the final in 1985, where they lost 3-1 to Everton.
In Paris, a 59th-minute goal by French international striker Patrice Loko sealed the tie after Paris won 1-0 in the away leg.
"It's a historic night for the club, particularly as it's 25 years old this year," beamed Luis Fernandez, PSG's Spanish coach.
"I would like to congratulate all the players for their performances tonight, Deportivo were not easy to play against and Rapid Vienna will not be either," he added.
In a generally poor and tense affair Loko's goal stood out. Fellow French international Youri Djorkaeff controlled the ball, swept past Deportivo midfielder Adolfo Aldana and passed to Loko.
He looked up and coolly shot from 25 yards past the despairing dive of goalkeeper Francesco Liano.
For Loko, signed from Nantes in the summer, it was a suitable reply to those who doubted whether he was a good buy after he received treatment for personal problems at the beginning of the season.
Deportivo created few chances as Brazilian striker Bebeto was marked out of the game.
Their best chance came in the ninth minute as Russian international Dmitri Radchenko, who joined Deportivo in preference to Celtic, crossed and Javier Manjarin's header clipped the crossbar.
"I think Bernard Lama, the Paris keeper, deserved a red card for handling the ball outside the area," said Deportivo's Welsh coach John Toshack.
