Boxing National Senior Championships: There was a major surprise at heavyweight when Alan Reynolds of Ballina failed in his bid for a seventh title before an enthusiastic crowd at the National Stadium last night.

Ian Tims of the St Matthew's club in Dublin capitalised on every Reynolds mistake and used a tremendous straight left jab to pile on the points for a 13-9 win.

Kildare bantamweight David Oliver Joyce, one of two cousins in the finals, punched his way to a decisive final win over Shaun McKim of Antrim. Joyce was relentless and McKim had no answer to his heavy and accurate punches to head and body. He took a standing count of eight in the third round before going down by 22 points to six.

Earlier the deciders at lighter weights also ended in clearcut wins. Conor Ahern of Baldoyle retained his light flyweight title by stopping Limerick's Jimmy Moore, a St Francis clubmate of Olympian Andy Lee.

At halfway, Ahern had a commanding 15-1 lead and the result was inevitable. Ahern said: "I never take Jimmy Moore for granted. He is a skilful boxer and I didn't expect it to be so easy."

The flyweight final saw Wexford's Derek Thorpe surprisingly unable to cope with the all-action style of Belfast's Carl Frampton. Frampton, who does not know how to step back, put in a highly convincing display for a 14-4 win.

Eric Donovan, the aggressive featherweight from St Michael's, Athy, was too strong for Eamon Touhey of Moate, Co Westmeath, and won 30-8.
