Taking part in the Leinster club football championship for the first time since 1975, Offaly champions Rhode were fortunate to survive in the tournament through this draw at Pearse Park. The home side were dominant in the first half, but a goal by Declan Gorman in the 13th minute kept Rhode in contention and the sides were level, 0-5 to 12, at the break.

Roy Malone fired home a goal for Rhode four minutes into the second half, but was denied a minute later by a brilliant save by Gaels' goalkeeper Eamon Crowe. The Gaels were dominant thereafter, with points by Colin Hannify and Padraic Davis putting them back on level terms.
