Andy Robinson is confident Edinburgh Rugby can soon be challenging for major honours under his guidance. But the man who was unveiled as the club's new head coach yesterday stressed his primary function is to help develop and prepare players for international rugby.
The 43-year-old former England manager, who signed a three-year contract, is keen to resume his coaching career and is excited about the challenges he faces in Scotland.
"I came up to Edinburgh, I had a look around and I was impressed with the whole organisation," said Robinson, who was forced to resign as England coach in November.
"I think there is real potential to grow and develop a side which can be successful in Europe. I've seen both their games so far this season. I was at the Leinster game and I watched the Ulster game on television. The key aspect for me was the enthusiasm the team showed, and the ability to attack in different ways impressed me."
Meanwhile, former Scotland and Lions fullback and wing Bruce Hay has died, aged 57, after a long illness. Hay played 23 times for Scotland between 1975 and 1982. He also took part in three Tests for the Lions on the 1980 tour to South Africa, and he appeared four times for the Barbarians.
