Dermot Weld will make a midweek decision about sending his star stayer Vinnie Roe to Australia for a third attempt at winning the Melbourne Cup.
The Curragh trainer issued an upbeat bulletin about Vinnie Roe yesterday on the back of his third to Collier Hill and The Whistling Teal in Saturday's Irish St Leger.
"He is sound in every way. We're very happy with him and we will make a decision in the middle of the week about Melbourne," he said. "The haematoma which caused him to miss a couple of bits of work looks like it just told."
Back in fourth on Saturday was the Coronation Cup winner Yeats and Aidan O'Brien hasn't ruled out the option of sending him to Melbourne for the first day in November.
"There are lots of options. There is Melbourne and there is also the Canadian International. We will wait for a week or 10 days and see," the Ballydoyle trainer said yesterday.
Vinnie Roe, runner-up last year to Makybe Diva, and fourth in 2002, was eased in the Melbourne betting by Cashmans yesterday to 16 to 1 with Collier Hill unchanged at 25 to 1.
The second day feature at the Listowel Festival this afternoon is the €50,000 Nursery which has been dominated in recent years by Kevin Prendegast.
The Curragh trainer is doubly represented again but with rain forecast the better option could be Spanish Blue who won on a soft surface at the Tralee Festival.
Nerys has a good draw and Rory Cleary's claim on her side in the opening maiden while the smart flat horse Zelkova can make a winning jumping debut in the juvenile hurdle. His trainer Frances Crowley know what's needed to win this race and Ruby Walsh is a significant jockey booking.
Dafaroun has a 5lb penalty for winning at Tipperary on Thursday where he indicated today's extra furlong in the first division of the sprint handicap will be ideal.
