BRITISH OPEN QUALIFYING:Darren Clarke is the highest ranked of nine Ryder Cup players hoping to book their place at this year's British Open at St Andrews through today's International Final Qualifying at Sunningdale, reports Paul Gallagher.
Clarke is currently ranked 163rd in the world and heads a field of 96 players, including Paul McGinley and Shane Lowry, looking to secure one of the 10 Open slots up for grabs.
The 41-year-old, whose best finish at the British Open was runner-up to Justin Leonard at Royal Troon in 1997, is attempting to compete in his 19th Open in this the 150th anniversary year of the oldest major of them all.
Clarke is joined by fellow Ryder Cup hero McGinley, who will attempt to win a place at his 17th Open, while Irish Open champion Lowry is the third Irishman in the field and carries hopes of making his debut in the July major.
European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie will also attempt to qualify at the Berkshire venue and continue his run of 20 consecutive appearances. The Scot qualified from a play-off the last time he was at Sunningdale for the 36-hole event six years ago. Should Montgomerie make it to the Home of Golf, he will hold fond memories for he finished runner-up to Tiger Woods when the Open was last played there in 2005. Other former Ryder Cup players attempting to qualify include; Thomas Bjorn, Niclas Fasth, Paul Broadhurst, Peter Baker, David Howell and Andrew Coltart.
Play gets underway in the RA’s 36-hole qualifying from 6.30am on the Old and New courses at Sunningdale.
WOMEN'S TOUR:England's Florentyna Parker earned her first European Tour victory at the ABN AMRO Open in the Netherlands yesterday.
German-born Parker, 21 in two weeks, carded a final round of two-under-par 70 at Golfclub Broekpolder in Rotterdam for a two-stroke win over Scotland’s Krystle Caithness.
Parker led by two strokes after a personal best of 66 yesterday and held on.
Best of the Irish was Rebecca Coakley on 215, followed by Martina Gillen (221) and Hazel Kavanagh (222).
IRISH WOMEN'S OPEN STROKEPLAY:England's Hannah Burke added a final round 71 to win by five shots from Australia's Justine Lee at Newlands Golf Club yesterday.
Burke, who started the day three strokes ahead of the field, raced to two under par through the sixth hole in the teeming Irish rain. So heavy were the showers that play was suspended on two separate occasions while greenkeepers worked tirelessly to clear the flooding greens. Burke went on to turn four strokes ahead of the field and never looked like being caught after birdies on 15, 17 and 18. A thrilled Burke was delighted with her first Irish Strokeplay, particularly having lost last year’s play-off at the seventh tie hole to Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell).
Wales’ Tara Davies was two shots behind Lee in third place while Australia’s Ashley Ona finished fourth ahead of rising superstar Julie Yang (South Korea). Irish Champion Mary Dowling (New Ross) added a 78 to her overnight total to finish best of the Irish, one shot ahead of Paula Grant (Lisburn) and County Louth’s Deirdre Smith.
