Low: Dismasting off Uruguay – Leg 5
While leading the damage-stricken fleet, Franck Cammas also became a victim when Groupama was dismasted 50 miles from the coast of Uruguay. Puma moved in for the kill, winning the leg while Telefonica took second place. Groupama limped in for third under jury rig.
High: Podium regulars
Difficult to decide whether Groupama’s first win in Leg 4 into Auckland – that sealed their self-belief – or the victory last month into their home port of Lorient was the more important. Either way, Cammas and his team won three legs and placed on the podium in all nine.
High: Poisson d’avril
To celebrate finally exiting the brutal and freezing Southern Ocean on Leg 4, the team relaxed long enough to set-up an April Fool’s prank, sending all the crew below “off-watch” while Foxall sailed the boat single-handedly as part of a new system of resting the crew. The video went viral and many were fooled.
