After four stages of the Credit Union Junior Tour the Irish and British junior champions, Mark Scanlon and Yanto Barker, are inseparable on time and divided only on points at the top of the overall classification. Scanlon still leads with 27 points to 23 but they have a showdown this morning with a six miles time trial at Sligo.

The stage of 66 miles yesterday from Clones to Sligo was won by Joachim Schoonacker of Belgium from Jamie Alberts (Britain). Declan McKenna (Tuam) was at the head of a group of four in third place at 20 seconds with Scanlon in the main pack, ninth, at 1:14.

Bradley Wiggins (Team Brite) led in the big bunch with Marko Kurits (Estonia) eighth followed by Scanlon and Barker.

Schoonacker and Alberts went clear before Enniskillen, 40 miles out and although their lead went to over a minute four others - McKenna, Martin St Laurent (Canada), Quinton McFall (Ballymena) and Stephen Gallagher (Dixons Ireland) - set out in pursuit after Manorhamilton and reduced the gap to just 20 seconds.

This morning's six-mile time trial is followed at 2.30 when the 72 survivors set out for 42 miles to Ballina. While Scanlon has been outstanding this season and has recorded several wins against senior opposition he is untried in a short time trial against such speed merchants as Barker and Wiggins.

Barker has a 21 minute and 30 second, 10-miles time trial to his credit while in recent weeks Wiggins added three British track championships to the world junior pursuit title he earned in Cuba and he followed up by taking the British junior 25 TT championship in 53:53. However, Scanlon has an advantage of a minute and 45 seconds over Wiggins.

Overall - 1, M Scanlon (Dixons Ireland) 10:50:34; 2, Y Barker (Britain) same time; 3, B Wiggins (Team Brite) at 1:45; 4, S Prendergast (Dixons Ireland) 1:49; 5, M Kurits (Estonia) 3:43; 6, Gallagher 3:50. The Ilford sprint cyclist Gary Edwards has been suspended from England's Commonwealth Games team after failing a routine drugs test.

Edwards (32), just returned from South Africa, is reported to have breached regulations governing testosterone levels in one of hundreds of tests carried out by the UK Sports Council. He has been suspended by cycling's governing body the British Cycling Federation (BCF). The English and Welsh Commonwealth Games Councils yesterday confirmed that tests on two English athletes and one Welsh competitor also had "adverse findings".

A spokeswoman confirmed the English athletes were Edwards and weight lifter Paul Supple. The name of the Welsh athlete is as yet unconfirmed.
