While Paddy Moriarty was best of the Ireland team in 13th place in the Manx International in the Isle of Man yesterday, there was an Irish win in the Viking Trophy event with Mark Scanlon from Sligo first at the end of the 75 1/2 miles.
Scanlon, who is still a junior, won by a minute and 23 seconds from Andrew Jackson (Cleveland) with John Taylor (Giant) third. Ireland's other representative, Dermot Nally, was 35th, 12 minutes down.
Moriarty was involved in an early breakaway group in the main event over three laps of the 37 3/4mile TT circuit when he went ahead with five others. They were joined by another 10 and they built up a lead of almost three minutes before the chasing started on the final lap.
At the finish John Tanner of the British team Brite was five lengths ahead of Chris Newton (Britain) with Matt Stevens (Giant) at 2:11.
Moriarty came in 11 minutes and 24 seconds in arrears, with Andy Roche 31st at 13:58. Paul Griffin was 35th at 14:04 and Tommy Evans 46th at 16:37. Ian Chivers was best placed of the Northern Ireland team, 37th.
