Bernadette Matthews found the answer to Hurricane Mitch. The Lady Vice Captain at Seapoint golf club became the first woman to shoot a hole in one at the Co Louth course. And the recipe for her success, she said, was to attend the Captain's dinner the night before.
Matthews used a seven wood at the 137-metres par three. However, she had to settle for third place in the hamper competition behind Pauline McCloskey and Linda McAuley. Matthews' husband Ray was playing the 13th hole when he heard the roar from the fifth. He was subsequently told his wife had a hole in one and calmly went on to have a birdie himself.
