MAURIZIO GANZ guided Inter Milan into the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup last night, scoring both goals as Roy Hodgson's side beat visitors Anderlecht 2-1.
Ganz, who had scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw in Brussels as a substitute, headed Inter into a 12th-minute lead when he rose unmarked for French midfielder Youri Djorkaeff's corner and sent a powerful header straight between the post and a Belgian defender on the line.
Aderlecht's Ghanaian striker, Yaw Preko, took his revenge in the 33rd minute. Preko led a rapid breakaway to the edge of the Inter area, flicked the ball wide for veteran Belgian international Bruno Versavel, and then knocked home the return unchallenged.
Inter had several scoring chances, to no avail, but Ganz showed how it should be done in the 60th minute with a diving header from point blank range.
Meanwhile, Spanish side Tenerife beat Brondby 2-0 after extra time in their UEFA Cup quarter-final second-leg match in Denmark last night. Tenerife won the match 2-1 on aggregate.
While Schalke, arriving with a two-goal advantage, did enough to earn a semi-final place after taking an early lead through Youri Mulder in their quarter-final with Valencia. The 3-1 aggregate win, 1-1 on the night, gave some revenge to the German league over Valencia, who earlier knocked out Bayern Munich.
