LEE SHARPE is expected to complete his £4.5 million move from Manchester United to Leeds in the next 24 hours after passing a medical at Elland Road yesterday. The 25-year-old former England winger will undergo one more examination today before the deal can finally go through.
"Everything's gone well so far and with luck we should be holding a news conference sometime tomorrow afternoon," said Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson, who is delighted to be making Sharpe his fourth summer acquisition following the arrivals of Nigel Martyn, Ian Rush and Lee Bowyer.
Sharpe has failed to hold down a regular place at Old Trafford (following the emergence of Alex Ferguson's exciting pack of youngsters. His prospects were made even more bleak when Ferguson bought midfield widemen Karel Poborsky and Jordi Cruyff recently.
Sharpe, who has won eight England caps, believes the move can regenerate his flagging international career. After agreeing a four-year deal, Sharpe said: "I was watching the European Championships when I realised that I needed a run of first-team football to get back my place in the England team.
"This is a new start for me and a new challenge and I am looking forward to it. I want to get down to a good week's training."
