The future of Ballinascorney golf club may become a little clearer tonight after an extraordinary general meeting.
The club has been "homeless" since the turn of the year after their home became a "pay for play" facility. "We have a number of options on the table and we want to put them to the members for their consideration," explains club captain Tom Meally. "Until we hear their views we would prefer not to say where we will be going from here. But we are seeking solutions to our situation."
The e.g.m. takes place at 8.0 p.m. at the Spawell sports complex, Templeogue, Dublin 6W.
Sutton senior cup player Kieran O'Byrne took the major honours in the second BMW-sponsored Hilary outing at Laytown and Bettystown on Sunday. O'Byrne's 68 off a four handicap just edged Clem Walshe (St Anne's) into second place with Royal Dublin's Louis Fitzgerald next on 69.
Local professional Bobby Browne won the professional gross from Ray Kane after both finished on 70, while the amateur gross went to another Sutton player, Mark Collins with a 71. Walshe also figured on the winning team with Mick Murphy (Baltinglass) and Royal Dublin's Stephen Prendergast with a 59.
Meanwhile Paddy McGuirk shot 69 at Laytown and Bettystown to win the Boyne Links outing on Thursday last. McGuirk had one shot to spare over Jimmy Heggarty (Spawell) with Frank Dwyer (Celbridge) and Neill Manchip (Royal Dublin) next on 71.
Graham Byrne, a six handicap from Edenderry, won the amateur nett with 42 points and also took the golfer of the year award. Byrne's level par round gave him a three-point advantage over Stephen Browne (Hermitage) and Gary Donnelly (Slade Valley).
Calling all women golfers. The closing date for entries for the 2001 Ulster Bank All-Ireland Ladies Fourball championship is next Friday, March 2nd.
Greg Allen, well known as RTE's chief reporter on golf, will take on a new role in the game next year when he takes over as captain of the Press, Radio and Television golfing society.
A single figure handicapper with Blainroe, Allen was nominated by this season's captain, Brian Kelly of Beech Park. The opening outing of the society will be at the European Club next Monday.
