SCHOOLS RUGBY ROUND-UP: SKERRIES COMMUNITY College came out on the right side of an almighty battle, three tries to two, against St Patrick's Navan in a 17-10 win in the Leinster Schools (Section A) Duff Junior Cup second round at the Alsaa grounds.
Flankers Dean Harford and Colin Oliver and wing Peter Lacey pierced the Navan defence, while outstanding fullback Graham Nelson cut through for two tries for St Patrick’s.
Elsewhere, it was even closer out in Dundrum where De La Salle Churchtown were rewarded for their staunch defence in a 10-8 cliffhanger against St Columba’s College.
De La Salle fullback Kevin Burke held his nerve to strike the winning penalty in the 57th minute, following on from a try by Aaron Hickey, to edge out St Columba’s, who had the lead and control for long periods through William Tidey’s try and Emmet Minch’s penalty.
East Glendalough are showing all the signs of a school on the up as they eased past Good Counsel from New Ross 36-3 at Gorey RFC yesterday. The Wicklow side are improving with each week, having qualified out of the Development Junior Cup. Lock Daniel Norse and centre Andrew Doran both grabbed a brace of tries and out-half Shane Farrar notched 16 points against a lone penalty from Counsel’s Conor Tierney.
