Snooker misses the red

LOVE and understanding in the board room appears to be the last thing on the minds of the board of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). Dennis Taylor (right), Steve Davis and Jason Ferguson, who were recently elected onto the WPBSA's seven-man board, put the brakes on to what they saw was a rash decision by chairman Rex Williams and his supporters.

A proposed move from the current WPBSA headquarters in Bristol to a £4.1 million facility just outside Birmingham has been stopped in its tracks. The three new board members bridled at the cost and thought that it was simply too much money for an organisation whose assets on June 30th last were listed at only £4.56 million.

This u-turn came after all of the formalities had been agreed with the planners, prompting Williams to deliver some scornful criticisms. An official bulletin cited all the work done and the expense occurred before noting: "We regret to inform you that the board were not unanimous in wishing to continue this project."

This dogfight is going to run and run.
