A commentator for Icelandic national television has become a cult hero after his reaction to the team’s late winning goal against Austria.
Gudmundur Benediktsson (41), a former Icelandic international player just could not contain himself after his side scored in the 94th minute at the Stade de France on Wednesday evening.
His elation was in no doubt as he broke into uncontrollable screaming, along with a few words of joy.
The commentator, who is also known as “Gummi Ben”, screamed: “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, we are winning this. We are in the round of 16.
“Never, ever, ever have I felt as good,” the former Iceland international player said. “Arnor Ingvi Traustason secured us the first European Championship victory. We have never lost, notice that, we have never lost.”
“Thanks for coming, Austria. Thanks for coming,” said Benediktsson, current assistant manager of KR Reykjavík.
Up to 10 per cent of Iceland’s 333,000 population are estimated to have travelled to France.
Clips of his reaction have now been shared thousands of times online.
Benediktsson should be at the helm again on Monday when Iceland, the smallest country to grace the Euros, take on England after their 2-1 win over Austria.
