Daryl Horgan has signed a new contract with Dundalk, giving the club a timely boost after the departure of Richie Towell to Brighton and Hove Albion.

This will be Horgan’s third season at the club after joining from Cork City in the winter of 2013. The hard-working winger had spent time on trial with League One side Peterborough but has ultimately opted to continue plying his trade at Oriel Park.

The 23-year-old Galway native had a terrific season for the Lilywhites making 41 appearances in all competitions and finding the net on 11 occasions. He played a key role in the hugely successful season which saw the club claim the President's Cup, retain the SSE Airtricity League title for the first time in their history and claim the FAI Cup at the Aviva Stadium clinching the double where he provided the assist to Towell for the only goal.

Speaking to dundalkfc.com after putting pen to paper Horgan said he is looking to continue the good form that he the team have shown over the past couple of seasons, and translate that into a decent run in Europe.

“I’m delighted, I have had two unbelievable years here. I love it up here and it’s a great place to be. We had a great year here, adding to the 2014 season as well which is great, we won everything so we are looking to go all out again and win what we can.

“We want to replicate the form we’ve had this year, we were brilliant the whole season and we just want to continue that now.

“Europe is a big one. I’m really looking forward to it but the fact that we are unseeded makes it a little bit more difficult. We will get a difficult draw no matter who we get but being unseeded doesn’t help.

“It’s an ambition of ours though to do well in Europe and hopefully we can make inroads, get through a round or two and see what happens.”

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny said he's delighted that Horgan has decided to stay with the club for next season and believes he has developed into 'the best winger in Ireland'

“We are delighted that Daryl Horgan has re-signed. When he came in here two years ago we already had a very good team. He really improved the team in that time in a major way. His ability to dribble past people inside or outside has been excellent. I feel he has really developed since he came here. He has been fantastic over the last two seasons.

“He is a two footed player. He can play left foot or right foot, inside or out, creates goals, scores goals and works really hard for the team. He has a fantastic workrate and he’s a great person as well to have around the place. He’s a really great guy and someone who has connected with the public.

“It’s great to have him back and I feel that he has become the best winger in Ireland.”
