UCD remain pointless and anchored to the bottom of the Premier Division table as late goals from Tiernan Mulvenna and John Dillon gave Dundalk a deserved victory at the Belfield Bowl on Saturday.

The County Louth team might have broken the deadlock midway through the first half when Keith Ward outpaced Hugh Douglas down the left ony to see his low dangerous cross grabbed by diving College goalkeeper Mark McGinley.

Neat interchange
The students then went close on 35 minutes when a neat interchange between Douglas and Robbie Creevy set up a chance for David McMillan only for the striker to scoop his shot over the bar.

Early in the second half midfielder Richie Towell had a long-range effort for the visitors which was well saved bly the alert McGinley.

Towell then had another effort well pushed out by the goalkeeper after the chance had been created by a neat passing move between Ward and Fahery.

College wasted a glorious chance to snatch the lead when Barry McCabe played a perfect ball through to McMillan only for his effort to be pushed into the side netting by goalkeeper Peter Cherrie.

The Students were to regret that miss with Dundalk netting twice in the space to two minutes.

Not cleared
First Towell lobbed the ball through to substitute Tiernan Mulvenna on 78 minutes and the striker fired beyond McGinley from 10 yards.

Then after a cross from Dane Massey was not cleared by the UCD defence, midfielder John Dillon shot home powerfully home from 14 yards to extend the visitors’ advantage.

Gareth Matthews did pull a goal back on 89 minutes for the Sudents when he drove home a free kick from 25 yards past Cherrie. But by then it was too little too late as Dundalk held on to claim the points.
