The FAI has said it will replace both sets of cup medals handed out to players on Sunday at the Aviva stadium after it was pointed out that the name of the winning club had been misspelled on every single one.

Sligo Rovers players said yesterday that they had noticed on the bus home yesterday that they were referred to as “Silgo Rovers” on the medals. The association says that the supplier in question has apologised and that replacements are on the way.

Rovers midfielder Joseph Ndo, meanwhile, has donated his medal from Sunday’s game as well as his medals for participating at the World Cup and African Cup of Nations in 2002 to the fundraising effort for Gary O’Neill. All three will be auctioned over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Cork City will today unveil former striker John Caulfield as the club’s new manager. The appointment has been held up slightly by the need to establish that the 49-year-old’s lack of a pro-licence wouldn’t be a problem but the FAI has confirmed that there will be a course starting in February which he will be able to attend and that has cleared the way for his appointment.

It will be a popular move with the club’s supporters who have shown a tendency to turn on outsiders, especially Dubliners, when things have gone wrong in the past.

Caulfield is not originally from Cork himself but played more than 450 games from the club over the course of a 15-year career.
