League of Ireland teams to split €475,500 in 2016 season prize money

The Premier Division champions are set to receive just €110,000 for winning the title

The League of Ireland returns on this weekend as champions Dundalk look to make it three titles on the bounce.

And ahead of the start of the domestic leagues, the FAI have revealed the financial incentives on offer for teams in the Premier and First divisions.

There is a total of €475,500 in prize money to be split between the two divisions - €371, 500 for the top flight and €104,000 for the second.

There is an added incentive for the four sides who qualify for Europe for the 2017/18 season. The European kitty is €1.15m in total, with €550,000 on offer for the club who reach the Champions league, and €200,000 apiece for the sides who reach the Europa League qualifiers.

The financial rewards for reaching Europe dwarf the those for winning the domestic league, with just €110,000 handed to the League of Ireland winners.
